Rio Manso Lodge

THE FISHING

The lodge fishes from rafts and boats. The NRS self-bailing rafts are comfortably appointed with frames and seats, and plenty of room for two anglers. On two of the lakes the lodge keeps Carolina skiffs which are great fishing platforms with wide stable foredecks for standing and casting. They are equipped with Honda outboards so the guides can quickly get guests to the remotest parts of the lakes. Once in position, the guides will row you along the shoreline and you’ll fish the old-growth forest structure, quite often sight casting to fish.

While the lodge takes pride in offering a good mix of both drifting and wading, it must be noted that early in the year (November and December) the water levels usually prevent much wading, so plan on spending most of your time fishing from a raft or boat. Although Rio Mando Lodge has found fishing from the rafts and boats to be by far the most productive of the two, they are considerate of their guests’ wishes. If you have a preference, please make it clear to the lodge manager and your guide in the morning and we will do our best to accommodate you. Breathable waders, felt or rubber soled wading shoes, and a wading staff are all appropriate. If your wading shoes have cleats or studs, please remove them as they can puncture the rafts. Please be sensitive to invasive species like whirling disease, didymo, New Zealand mud snails, etc. and be sure your wading gear is clean and dry.

Better yet, if you are considering new waders or wading shoes, get them for this trip. We recommend the newer rubber soled wading shoes as they are less likely to transmit invasive species. Orvis, Simms and Patagonia all make excellent shoes and waders.

The guides will put you only in water where you are comfortable. The wading is good and bottom dependable. There generally will not be much walking involved in getting to and from the water. Exceptions to this could involve some optional side trips to water accessible only by hiking in or riding horses if you are looking for a little more of a challenge and an even more remote setting. Of course, the rewards are almost always worth it!

BOATS AND EQUIPMENT

This destination is a combination of walk and wade, and floats with inflatable rafts.

Rebuilt in 2004 and uniquely designed, each one of the Rio Manso 9 guest rooms face northwest with spectacular views of Lago Hess and the Andes Mountains. Each of the rooms are comfortably appointed with either King Size or two Full Size beds and private bath. Some are equipped with a Jacuzzi as well. The lodge features a full wader room for tackle and waders, a fly tying area, a small, but well-stocked bar, and a spacious sitting area in front of our river stone fireplace. Many nights it is cool enough to enjoy the warmth and comfort of a roaring fire; cocktails and hors d’oeuvres are typically served there each evening. Meals are served in the main dining room and are the fitting conclusion to a day on the water or exploring the wonders of Patagonia. Should you require assistance any time of day or night, the lodges front desk staff is always available. There is a sauna available to drive out the chill and loosen those stiff casting muscles.
