San Huberto
THE FISHING
Ronnie Olsen and his family, including his mother, the one and only Dona Carmen, have been running the San Huberto Lodge for more than 40 years. Once an exclusive hunting lodge that that catered to red stag and wild boar hunts, the lodge has evolved into one of the most in demand fly fishing facilities in all of Argentina. Usually fully booked out anywhere from 6-12 months out, the lodge is in such high demand because of the extraordinary Malleo River, which flows through the heart of the Olsen family estancia. With exclusive access to 26.6 kilometers of the very best of the Malleo River, guest of the San Huberto Lodge also have exclusive access to the Huaca Mamuil Spring Creek, which also runs through the Olsen’s family estancia. The majority of the river offers easy access in and out as well as comfortable wading conditions for anglers of all ages and levels of conditioning.
The headwaters of the Malleo River are found within the bouondries of the Lanin National Park. Originating from Tromen Lake, the Malleo River flows for roughly 60 kilometers down in to the Alumine River. The Malleo runs between 30 and about 120 feet in width and while it is technically just one river, because of the varied topography found throughout its length, it has all the characteristics of five or six rivers. This is a very special river and fishery and there is no other way to put it. The aptly named henry’s Fork Section of the river is a virtual replica of its namesake in Idaho. Only with a lot fewer anglers on the river! The canyon section of the river is both challenging and exciting, offering steep rock walls that rise up on either side of the river. And as always, except when deep in the canyon, the majestic Lanin Volcano towers over river, dominating the lansdscape around it.
Simply put, the Malleo River is the finest dry fly river in all of Argentina. It offers the most consistent hatches in the country and truthfully, some of the best in the world. Mayflies, caddis, and stonefly hatches are about as reliable and predictable as those found anywhere, between November and April. Rainbow and Brown trout are found throughout the Malleo, with fish between 12-18 inches being common. Larger fish are caught just about every day.
Because floating is not permitted on the Malleo River, staying at San Huberto Lodge gives guests access to sections of the Malleo that no one else can fish. This ensures that anglers are fishing in parts of the river that are not subject to angling pressure the way other parts of the river that do not fall on the Olsen family’s private land are.
Ronnie Olsen also has a lovely high mountain lake that fishes beautifully, particularly in the early part of the season through the end of January. There are some enormous trout found at the lake and Ronnie has 2 very comfortable boats with 60 horse power four stroke engines that allow his guests access and fish the entire lake.
We absolutely love this river and cannot recommend it strongly enough. The only issue is going to be getting you in to the lodge!
