Arroyo Verde Lodge

THE FISHING

By far the majority of the fishing at Arroyo Verde Lodge takes place on the stunningly beautiful Traful River. The 16 kilometers of the Traful River run between the Traful Lake and the Limay River and the Estancia Arroyo Verde borders the entire length of the north side of the river (Ted Turner owns the south half of the river) Without question, this is the most scenic fishery in Argentina and it’s hard not to just stop and take it all in on occasion. Fishing the Traful is strictly walk and wade and is a 100% catch and release, fly fishing river. The Traful is a true “classic” mountain river: gin clear and ranging between 60-90 feet in width.

The guides will tend to choose dry fly fishing as much as possible, particularly when targeting a specific fish that has been sighted. Nyphing and the use of streamers are also employed when conditions and fish activity dictate.

The seasons play a huge role when fishing the Traful, with high fast running water during the months of November and December. During the summer months of January and February the rivers slows down a great deal until the Autumn rains in late March and April. And while most anglers don’t enjoy rain, it is highly beneficial when fishing the Traful River because higher water levels means that the fish will move in to the Traful from both the Traful Lake and the Limay River.

One of the unique aspects to this fishery is the size of the fish found in the Traful. We know of no other river in Argentina that consistently produces such large rainbows and browns. This is not the river for those anglers looking for 40 fish days and is far better suited to those anglers that are content to target trophy fish. 28-32 inch Rainbows and 28-30 Browns are caught weekly from the lodge.

Another unique aspect to fishing the Traful River is the opportunity to catch land locked Atlantic Salmon on the fly. The salmon will move in and out of the river with the rains so November and early December and April are probably the best time frame to target this species when considering trip to Arroyo Verde. These salmon can grow quite large and we had 2 guests this past year land fish over 30 inches. They put up a marvelous fight and are quite difficult to land.

There are 10 beats on the Traful River and guests will rotate through specific beats, depending on where the guides want to start out? Our favorite beats are the “Stick Pool” located just down from the Boca or mouth of the Traful Lake and the aptly named Pool of Plenty.

Floating the Limay River is also an option for guests who are staying for a full week at Arroyo Verde and we highly recommend it if you have 5-6 days of fishing from the lodge. The Limay holds some huge fish and after 4-5 days of wading, it’s a nice break to float such a lovely body of water.

Estancia Arroyo Verde is an excellent location for non anglers and it offers a superb horseback riding program, along with excellent hiking trails and world class bird watching.
