Wollaston Lake

THE FISHING

The waters of Wollaston Lake Lodge lure anglers from far and wide for the ultimate ‘Grand Slam’ of freshwater fishing: Northern Pike, Lake Trout, Walleye and Arctic Grayling. These world-class fish are found in only a handful of Saskatchewan’s 98,000 lakes. The Lodge’s catch-and-release tradition for pike (begun in the 1980’s) helps assure great fishing year after year, using barbless hooks and careful handling procedures. They make every effort to conserve the pike population for future generations. Each day you’ll head out with your guide in an 18 foot Lund Pro V equipped with 80 hp motors, MinnKota trolling motor and Lawrence depth finders. Wollaston Lake Lodge offers both quantity and quality of fish.

The guides are versed at spin, casting, or fly-fishing and will strive to put you onto productive fishing grounds. Northern pike account for about 70% of the total catch of anglers visiting Wollaston. Walleye are the next most common species taken, at 15%. Lake trout comprise 10% of the total catch, while Arctic grayling make up the final 5%. As far as pike are concerned, the key is to search for protected bays that possess a bottom composition of sand, sand-muck or sand-rock. These bays heat up faster and concentrate the pike. Bays with lily pad patches will be more productive than barren, sandy bottom areas. A small feeder creek entering these protected bays will further increase the number of shallow migrating pike as well. A favored bait for northern pike is a No.5 Mepps spinner (black bucktail with either chrome or gold blades), retrieved fast over and around vegetation, rocks, points, deeper sandy flats and wood cover. Walleye take spinners such as the Mepps, as well as plastic curly-tailed grubs.

BOATS AND EQUIPMENT

Wollaston Lake

Tour Location

LOCATION

At the mouth of the Umphreville River, on Hidden Bay, Wollaston Lake, Saskatchewan. This is close to Saskatchewan’s border with Nunavut [Northwest Territories], just south of the Arctic Circle. Wollaston Lake is vast: 100 miles long, 40 miles wide at points, and up to 400 feet deep: it has 400 islands, and 2,700 miles of shoreline.

PRIMARY SPECIES

Northern Pike, Lake Trout, Arctic Grayling, and Walleye

SEASON OF OPERATION

June to August. ‘Ice-out’ in this region of Canada occurs in the middle of June, coinciding with the opening of Wollaston Lake Lodge on June 9. This is usually a time when anglers target the trophy pike marauding in the shallow bays, which are warming from the early summer sunlight. Fishing remains extremely productive through the end of August, when the camp closes for the season.

ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE LOGISTICS

There are very specific arrival and departure days which are based on specific week each summer. Please call or email the office for specific dates per week. Guest have the option of a 5 night 4 day fishing trip or a 9 night 8 day trip.
