THE FISHING

What makes this lodge so special is the diversity of the angling program that lodge owners, Sarah and Andrew, have developed over the years. When you stay at Gaspe Coastal Lodge, you have the ability to target Atlantic Salmon, Striped Bass and Brook Trout all in one trip.   

Atlantic Salmon – Be ready for a full day on the river, with a minimum of 8 hours spent on the water. Water levels permitting, you’ll float from pool to pool in a 26′ or 20′ canoe, skillfully navigated by your guide using a traditional wooden pole. In certain circumstance, walk and wade may be preferred. For those seeking the thrill of targeting salmon directly, sight fishing is possible in clear waters, where you can use both swinging wet flies and dead-drifting dry flies to entice these magnificent fish. During the warmer summer months, particularly in August, we often start early—sometimes as early as 4:30 a.m.—to take advantage of cooler temperatures and maximize your chances of success.

Most of the Atlantic Salmon fishing will take place on the Grand Cascapedia, Petite Cascapedia, and Bonaventure rivers, with each of these historic rivers offering an unparalleled experience in the pursuit of one of angling’s most coveted species. Some key points to be aware of. The Atlantic Salmon fishery is highly regulated by the Quebec Government and certain rules have been in place for decades. If you land two Atlantic Salmon in a day, you are limited out and not allowed to fish for the rest of the day. Additionally, the Beat System on these rivers is also highly regulated and allocation to specific sections of the river is done each day by a lottery system. This ensures a fair process that works for all the Atlantic Salmon Stake holders in the area.

Stripe Bass – The Striped Bass fishing from the lodge is exceptional and is some of the best you will anywhere along the east coast of North America. It is that good! 20 fish days are not uncommon with fish ranging between 20-35 inches cast to daily. Bigger fish are seen regularly. Your Striper Day on the water will span around 8 hours, with limited travel time on the water to maximize every moment spent fishing.  Most of your time will be spent aboard one of the four purpose-built flats skiffs (think bonefishing in the Bahamas), where anglers take turns casting from the platform at the bow as your guide poles the skiff and spots fish. Casting to a school of Striped Bass from a skiff from one of the lodge skiffs, with the Quebec hills as backdrop is a vey cool angling experience and one, we highly recommend to our guests. Although walk and wade can make for a very memorable outing when the stars align, be prepared to get your feet wet, if you’re up for it! It’s not easy and you will not catch a lot of stripers on foot, but for those who are interested in the challenge over numbers of fish caught, it is a highly rewarding experience. Early in the season, expect to see tailing and blitzing fish as striped bass actively feed in the shallows. As the season progresses, you’ll encounter large schools of flashing fish, creating incredible opportunities for sight fishing. For those who want to explore deeper or more structured waters, the lodge has a Mako boat that allows access to prime areas beyond the reach of the skiffs.

Brook Trout – Pursuing native sea-run brook trout in the Gaspé Peninsula is an adventure that combines challenging conditions with breathtaking rewards. The prime season for these elusive fish runs from mid-July to the end of August, when they return to the rivers from the sea. Fishing for brook trout in this part of Quebec often takes you deep into the backcountry, exploring remote stretches of water far off the beaten path. This experience is not for the faint of heart, or those with physical limitations, but the effort is well worth it. Expect a full day on the water. Your guides will navigate the journey, whether it’s wading through rugged terrain or fishing from a canoe, as you chase after the thrill of sight fishing for these vibrant, hard-fighting trout.

If you are looking for a dedicated Brook Trout trip, this is not the right location for you. If, however, you would like to spend a day hunting Brookies, as part of your trip to Gaspe Coastal Lodge, it’s a great day that will provide you with so much more than simply the number of fish you catch. The Brook Trout program at Gaspe Coastal Lodge is still in its infancy, and with every passing season, the guides have a better understanding of this fishery and how to properly utilize it. There is virtually no one else in this area that are fishing for these Sea Run Brook Trout and the lodge is pioneering this fishery with some pretty good results so far.

GETTING THERE

There are many ways to travel to Gaspe Coastal Lodge. The closest airport is located in Bonaventure, Quebec, about 25 minutes from the lodge. The airport is served Monday to Friday by a local charter. This flight requires an overnight stay in Montreal. Air Canada provides daily flights from Montreal to Gaspe, QC and Bathurst, NB. The Lodge is a two-hour drive from both Gaspe and Bathurst. Guests can either rent a car or the lodge can pick you up and take you back for $225 each way.
