Rapid Lake Lodge
THE FISHING
Fly-fishing the Ungava Bay, the most remote of wild places, is an astonishing experience. One of the great strongholds of Arctic char in Canada is found in Quebec’s East Ungava Bay, a 9,000 square-mile wilderness peninsula that has more rivers than sport fishermen. Most of the rivers are filled with fish that will die of old age, never having seen a fly or a lure. The Ungava Bay is a giant fish factory, where angling is nonetheless a solitary experience, because Rapid Lake Lodge is the only lodge in this vast area. Rapid Lake accommodates only 8 anglers each week. Guests enjoy exclusive access by floatplane to over sixty miles of classic riffles, runs, secluded river pools, waterfalls and tributaries. Arctic char in these drainages are generally huge, though the much of the most productive fishing is done with medium to heavy sinking tips.
One of the great spectacles in all of fishing is in September on the Ungava Peninsula, in quest of the fire-red Char; the cool weather, colorful tundra, snow-covered peaks, and river pools which are filled with char bright enough to light a fire in your memory forever. Catching many, many char daily in the 10 to 12 lb range, and occasional 15 lbs or more is absolutely normal. The fishing here is unlimited. The Lodge has access to many rivers and pools which have never been fished.
Since these fishing trips are daily fly-outs, by helicopter or float plane, the seats are limited. The pilots are also your guides. The guide to angler ratio on a helicopter group will be 1 to 4. The guide ratio on a float plane group will be 1 to 2. The guides know all the best rivers and pools. The helicopter or float plane will never leave clients alone, they stay together all day. An excellent hunting program can also be booked through this location. Please call the office for full details
BOATS AND EQUIPMENT
Both float planes and a helicopter are available as transportation to the site. As soon as guests arrive, anglers may wade, cast, or drift. There are 18 foot aluminum boats with 25 horse powered engines for fishing when not using a fly out Fly and Spin Welcome
GETTING THERE
Guests must travel on a commercial airline to Montreal. From there the Lodge will arrange a flight via FirstAir or Air Inuit to Kuujjuaq. From Kuujjuaq a floatplane or helicopter will proceed to Rapid Lake Lodge, or their sister establishment, more oriented to hunting, Camp Barnoin. [Alternatively, if you happen to have your own seaplane, you can fly directly to the Lodge.]
