THE FISHING
The marshland, south of New Orleans, covers an area far larger than most anglers realize. This area covers thousands of square miles of pristine wilderness, having remained virtually untouched by time or development. The horrific BP oil disaster of May 2009 has scarcely impacted the marsh is this part of Louisiana, with the area benefitting from south easterly currents and winds that pushed most if the oil further north and east. Driving through the countless creeks and bays in a skiff, it would be surprising to see any of the affects that the spill had on other parts of the state and its coastline.
Each morning guests will be picked up in front of the hotel at 6:00 am, where their guide will drive them down to the town of Violette, for breakfast at Penny’s Cafe. This restaurant is a bit of a tradition amongst redfish guides and it serves very hearty breakfasts. Penny’s is also where guests can pick up sandwiches for the day.
Huge fish in shallow, clean water is where you will find yourself when fishing the south south/east marshlands. On an average day you can expect to catch 5-10 fish when conditions cooperate, days catching 15-25 fish are not uncommon, and an exceptional day will push close to 50 fish. Because this area is so large, you will rarely see other anglers on the water. The average run out to the fishing grounds is between 10 and 15 miles, this means guests are usually fishing within a half hour of leaving the boat ramp in the morning.
Redfish thrive and are plentiful here in the marsh and in the coastal waters of South Louisiana, where they can be fished year round. Depending on the season, reds can be found anywhere from the shallow duck ponds to the deep oil field canals. During the fall and winter months, the guides will tend to concentrate on the Biloxi Marsh area, where the big redfish and black drum come in to feed in the shallow warm waters. For trophy Reds, there is no better place anywhere on earth. This seemingly unending marsh is a virtual nursery that supports the growth and nurture of these fish from birth to early maturity. The waters teem with life, both below and above, and fish from 5 to 12 pounds are the norm. Fish over 30 pounds are regularly caught and fish pushing the 50 pound range are not unheard of.
BOATS AND EQUIPMENT
East Cape Vantage Skiffs powered by Honda 4 stroke 50 HP engines. The boats have plenty of cockpit space to move around and have the coffin box for extra seating. The skiffs are fast and hit and draft beautifully in about 6 inches of water, meaning that guests will be able to access all but the skinniest of water found throughout the marshland.
GETTING THERE
All guests will fly into and out of the Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport. A waiting town car and driver will pick guests up at the designated location, guests will then be driven directly into the French Quarter and dropped off at the Maison Dupuy Hotel, to begin their stay. Guest can also drive into the city from other parts of the US as well.

New Orleans has an enormous array of quality accommodations, where you stay will depend on what exactly you want to be doing once the fishing day is over. Most of our guests prefer to stay in the French Quarter, where the nightlife of New Orleans can be taken full advantage of. Our favorite place to stay in this area is the Maison Dupuy. This beautifully restored hotel is located just a couple of blocks from the hustle and bustle of Bourbon Street; we really like this hotel because while it’s close to all the action, it’s situated in a quiet residential neighborhood, where guests can still get a good night sleep. The hotel consists of seven fully restored 19th-century town houses, which surround one of the Quarter’s most beautiful courtyards. Lush tropical greenery and palm trees provide a serene setting for meals and cocktails, soft lighting and comfortable seating add to the courtyard’s attraction. Most rooms are fairly large, and some have balconies. For casual dining, the French Quarter Bistro serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Le Meritage, which locals consider a hidden gem, serves wine-centric cuisine at dinner from Tuesday through Saturday. The Maison Dupuy offers guests the quintessential Old New Orleans experience that most of the larger hotel chains simply cannot replicate. Our trip package includes breakfast and lunch each day but does not include dinner, we leave this up to our guests, as the city represents some of the finest dining options found anywhere. There are so many truly excellent places to eat within a 10 minute walk of the hotel, some of our all time favorites include Dickey Brennans Steak House, the Acme Oyster house, Brennan’s Sea Food, G.W. Fins, Dragon’s Oysters and seafood and Antoine’s Restaurant
