Mission Lodge

THE FISHING

The species diversity found within Mission’s fishable waters is nothing short of astonishing! Some of these species are referred to as native Alaska species, which in essence are the non-ocean going fish. The rest are the Pacific salmon species that lodge guests target in or close to the tidewater as they first enter the rivers and streams of the vast Bristol Bay area. Lodge guests at Mission are blessed with a true abundance of riches, with five species of Pacific Salmon that come up the lodges’ “home” rivers and streams.

The Togiak traditionally has a good run of mid-summer Kings and rivers like the Goodnews have a very good and fairly lengthy run of Coho.

Throughout the summer and fall seasons, there really is a different combination of salmon that are available to all Mission guests so what you are most interested in targeting in terms of species will dictate when you should go.

If you would like to take some fresh salmon home, our guides will help you pick the best ones to keep and filet, vacuum seal and flash freeze your catch. Our lodge has developed the attitude of “limiting your kill, don’t kill your limit”. Each angler can take up to 50 pounds of frozen salmon filets.

For the native species, the lodge practices a strict “Catch and Release” policy that helps ensure that guests can enjoy quality fishing for decades to come.

In terms of the vast area that Mission Lodge operates in angling program in, the lodge is very fortunate to have several locations that include private leases, tribal lands, State and National Parks and Refuges. Mission Lodge currently has permits to fish in the following State and Federal parks, preserves and wilderness refuges: The Togiak National Wildlife Refuge, Katmai National Park and Wood-Tikchik State Park.

Central to the fishing experience at Mission Lodge is the exceptional and well-oiled daily fly out program that all lodge guests enjoy. Each day guests are flown to a different location in one of three impeccably well maintained DE Haviland Beavers. These planes are all piloted by veteran Alaska bush pilots who each have a lifetime of experience flying in the remote Alaska wilderness.

In the last 5-7 years Mission Lodge has become synonymous with exciting top water mouse pattern fly fishing for rainbows, grayling and Dolly Varden. The guides at the lodge have this method of fly fishing beautifully dialed in so if you enjoy hard hitting top water eats, Mission Lodge needs to be at the top of the list of Alaska lodges to fish.

BOATS AND EQUIPMENT

The boats used while fishing at the Mission Lodge are John boats powered by Yamaha 40 HP 2 and 4 stroke engines, with bucket seats. There is a smaller emergency engine at the back of each boat.

GETTING THERE

To reach the Mission Lodge you will fly into Anchorage, Alaska. Once arrived you will then fly from Anchorage to Dillingham, approximately one hour. In Dillingham you will be greeted by a Mission Lodge staff member who will transport you and your luggage to Lake Aleknagik by a private shuttle van. Transfer to boat and enjoy a scenic and rather quick ride across the lake to the lodge. The staff will deliver your luggage and gear to your room, while you’re greeted by the hosts and then pick up your fishing license, if you have not already done so.

Because of flight schedules for various points in the lower forty-eight, it may be necessary to overnight in Anchorage either on the way in, way out or both. All trips start and end on Friday, therefore, we highly recommend that when arriving – ARRIVE in Dillingham after 12:00 PM and DEPART Dillingham before 12:00 PM on your departure day.
