Rapids Camp Lodge

THE FISHING

While the highly productive Naknek Rapids are right by the Lodge, the most interesting locations to fish are fly-out ones. Many anglers who journey to Alaska do so to specifically target salmon. In peak season, as many as 20,000 salmon may come in on one tide, many over 20 pounds. The five Salmon species have somewhat different seasons during the June/October period and what you want to catch will dictate when in the summer and early fall months that you should be coming.

From the Lodge one can also access over 50 remote streams, teeming with Trophy Rainbow, Leopard Rainbow, Grayling, and Arctic Char. Another option is the extreme deep-sea fishing in Kodiak and Geographic Harbours. Using herring as bait, anglers can go after 100+ lb Halibut. Fish Alaska Magazine chose the Naknek River as the #1 Trophy Rainbow river in Alaska. The Rapids, which are right in from of Rapids Camp Lodge, is the premiere spot to fish the river. Whether you want to wade out to the best spot, or for those who prefer boat fishing, the Trophy Rainbows are plentiful. The Rapids is not the only area the Naknek has to offer. Guests can enjoy a scenic boat ride upstream to Lake Camp, where beautiful Trophy Rainbow fresh from the lake can be caught. The Naknek has everything to offer from beautiful scenery, wildlife, and of course Trophy Rainbow.

The Nushagak River is home to the world’s largest King Salmon. During the peak of the season, 120,000 to 200,000 Salmon come up the river per month. Sometimes there will be as many as 20,000 on one tide alone. In addition to the native river Salmon, fresh water Salmon can also be caught at “The Nush” and can go upwards of 20 lbs. The outcamp at the Nush on Millionaire’s Bluff, is an absolute must during the week! It’s definitely one of the best spots on the river and the lodge keeps 3 boats and has a permanent guide who spends the season based from here, scouting the river for the best fishing. For anglers who enjoy new water throughout the course of their week, Rapids Camp Lodge is an ideal location. The daily fly outs ensure that both new areas are fished each day and that a wide variety of species are accessible. This is a first class set up all the way!
