THE FISHING

Without question, the Missouri River is one of the finest tail waters on the planet, particularly for those who share our enthusiasm for dry fly fishing. Offering one of the healthiest river environments in the Western United States, The Mo enjoys consistently spectacular hatches of mayflies, caddis flies, and midges.

Formed by the confluence of the Gallatin, Jefferson and Madison rivers at the town of Three Forks, the Missouri River flows for 700 miles across Montana. Unlike the similarly long Yellowstone River, there are numerous dams and reservoirs on the Missouri River that help shape its character. More than two hundred miles of its length consists of various reservoirs and lakes, the largest of which is Fort Peck Lake in the Hi-Line region of northeast Montana.

The Missouri River finally emerges from all these dams beneath Holter Dam. This stretch of water from Holter Dam to the town of Cascade, thirty miles downstream, is the prime trout fishing waters on the Missouri. The cold waters released by Holter Dam provide excellent trout habitat. The Missouri River in this section flows through a small agricultural valley and a canyon that has sparsely forested hillsides. Interstate 15 closely follows the river.

The lodge guides also operate on the nearby Missouri River tributaries such as Prickly Pear Creek, Belt Creek, Blackfoot River, the Dearborn River, Flat Creek, the Sun River, and others. Nearby Holter and Hauser lakes are also popular spots.

These local rivers abound with wild rainbow and brown trout. You’ll also find brook trout and cutthroat in many of the system’s estuaries. For the most part, guests will catch trophy-class fish with brown trout from 16-24 inches and rainbows from 15-22 inches.

BOATS AND EQUIPMENT

The guides use both Hyde and Clackacraft Drift Boats when floating the main Missouri River system and smaller inflatable rafts when fishing the smaller river tributaries in the area.

Some of the endorsed outfitters are also Coast Guard captains and can take guests by jet boat to some of the exceptional fishing spots where drift boats simply can’t get in to, including the fabled Land of the Giants. Jet boat excursions are not included in package rates, additional charges will apply. Please speak directly with Jen when you are the lodge for pricing and availability for this unique fishing option.

GETTING THERE

Guests have two options when traveling from out of state, other than driving. The easiest and quickest way in is to fly into the Great Fall International Airport (Airport code GFT) and have a shuttle drive you the 40 odd miles to the lodge, or you can rent a car and do the scenic drive along Interstate 15, which runs along a good deal of the MO on the way to the lodge. The other option is to fly to Helena Montana Regional Airport (Airport code HLN) and have a shuttle pick you for the 50 mile drive. You can also rent a car from the airport in Helena.
