Where The owners and management at the Delphi Club have really altered the fishing program at the lodge over the past couple of years and the end result of this work is a fishing program that has to be one of the most diverse found anywhere in the Bahamas. Whereas the lodge program used to rely heavily on fishing the world-famous west side Abaco Marls, there are now many more quality options that have really enhanced the overall angling experience at Delphi.
For guests who like to wade, the lodge accesses the hard packed flats of Cherokee Sound and the flats down south near Sandy Point. If desired, during the course of a week of fishing, anglers can expect 2-3 days dedicated to wading when the conditions allow. The white sand and turtle grass flats traditionally found on the eastern side of Abaco will produce some big fish in the 8 pound plus category, this area offers firm footing and site casting to large singles.
At least a couple of days are usually spent fishing the vast west side marl flats that have become synonymous with quality bonefishing. The Abaco Marls are a huge interconnected series of bays, estuaries and marl bottom lagoons that offer good numbers of bonefish in the 2 to 5 pound range with bigger fish being fairly common. With the unfortunate closing of the Abaco Lodge due to Hurricane Dorian, there is very little angling pressure in the marls these days and its not uncommon to not see any other anglers during thew course of a day.
In a further effort to expand the fishery and angling options for club guests, the owners recently bought two larger flats skiffs to better access the Sandy Point area. Trips out to fabled fishing grounds of Moore’s Island and Gorda Cay are now done quickly and in comfort. This is a fantastic option that has the potential to deliver a trophy fish of a lifetime.
All the clubs fishing areas are accessed by trailering skiffs from the lodge and while some may view this as a negative, we tend to see it as a real positive in that it allows guests to access a diverse number of distinct fishing environments on Abaco. This in turn leads to more species to target during the course of the week. For certain, this is first and foremost a bonefish destination. However, big ‘Cudas, permit down and Sandy Point, along with tarpon on the west side of the marls in the late spring and summer, are all possible.
BOATS AND EQUIPMENT
The Delphi Club has a fleet of Dolphin Flats Skiffs powered by 60 horse powered Yamaha engines. There is plenty of dry storage and cockpit space. Decks are clear and free of obstacles that could snag a fly line. The bucket seats are comfortable and there is lots of space for two guests to be comfortable when fishing all day.
GETTING THERE
One of the really nice aspects to fishing at the Delphi club is that its one of the easiest bonefish lodges to get to in the Bahamas. Guests will fly into the Marsh Harbour International Airport and from the airport it’s just a 45-minute drive down to the lodge. Many major US and Canadian air carriers fly into and out of Marsh harbour daily. Charter service can also be arranged from south Florida or Nassau. Private planes are also welcome at Marsh Harbour.
