Berry Islands – Soul Fly Lodge

THE FISHING

The fishing at Soul Fly Lodge offers what we would best describe as quality over quantity. This is not really a location where guests can expect to catch lots of bonefish (10+) each day, although it is possible and does happen. Where Soul Fly shines is the size of the bonefish, with an average sized bonefish being a healthy 5 pounds. Much larger fish are seen and cast to daily and this is one of the best locations in all the Bahamas for targeting double digit bonefish. The other way that Soul Fly stands out is the strength of the permit fishery they have there, with some of the most consistent permit fishing in the entire country. The enormous flat to the south west of Ambergris is similar to many of the best permit flats found in Cuba and guests can expect to fish for permit found on the backs of rays, along with fishing to cruising singles and doubles. There are not many places in the Bahamas where you can target permit every day if that’s what you want to do and fishing from Soul Fly allows you to chase permit daily while also targeting big bones.

Depending on the tides/wind and where your guide takes you that day, anglers can a variety of different fishing situations during the course of your stay. There are some terrific creeks that go way back on the northern part of Great Harbour Cay that offer excellent bonefishing when the tides are right. The many flats to the south of Great Harbour Cay hold good sized bonefish, along with some very big ‘cudas. These flats are a mix of white sand and a pretty clean marl that offers excellent visibility where anglers can see fish from a long way off. Turtle grass flats are also found in many parts of the Berry Islands, which hold a wide variety of snappers and ‘cudas.

For guests who enjoy wading, the Berry Island fishery is right up there with the south end of Andros is terms of quality wading options. Good hard packed footing is available in many parts of the fishery, from Ambergris down to the Chub Cays. When the tides are right there are numerous locations throughout the fishery where guests can get out of the skiff and wade for several hours.
