Abaco – Treasure Caye

THE FISHING

Treasure Caye is located about two thirds of the way up the island of Abaco, on the east side of the island. From a bonefishing perspective, this is about as good a location as one could ask for in that it affords anglers an enormous and varied area to fish. The northern edge of the world famous Abaco Marls is easily reached from Treasure Caye. This part of the marls is a highly productive bonefish area and certainly gets less pressure than the main section of the marls, which is located closer to Marsh Harbour. The hundreds of islands and thousands of flats in the northern marl section produce superb bonefish action and based on their location, will offer many good fishing locations that are sheltered from poor weather, particularly when a northeast wind is blowing. Guests may see another boat or two during a day of fishing the northern marl, but thats about it. This area does not offer good wading as the bottom structure is fairly soft. There are some places where it’s more than doable to get out and walk to your fish. Bonefish in the 3-5 pound class are the norm in this area with regular shots at fish in the 6-10 pound class fairly common. If the weather is good and you can get out to some of the outer northern marl barrier islands like Snapper Caye, Big Pigeon, or Lockhart Caye, you will find some of the most beautiful mangrove and turtle grass flats in the Bahamas.

Further north, about a 20 minute drive from the resort, the Cooperstown area is one of the least pressured, good quality fishing grounds in all of the Bahamas. There are no big resorts up this way, just a series of small hamlets and fishing villages on either side of the island, where conch and lobster fishing are the main employment opportunities. This part of Abaco is fairly reminiscent of the lower Exumas in terms of water clarity and the type of flats you’ll fish. And like Exuma, this part of Abaco offers superb wading for those who like to fish out of the skiff. Hard packed white sand flats abound along with good sized bones in the 4-5 pound range. It’s quite rare to see another flats skiff up here, which is surprising given the quality of the fishing. There are several good puts ins to the north and south of Cooperstown, and we happen to like the area around Little Abaco Caye and the flats located around the Hard Rock Cayes, especially for bigger bones. These outer islands create a protective barrier that runs south about 20 miles from the creek that divides Little Abaco Island and Big Abaco Island on the west side of the island. There are countless flats in this area that are rarely fished as most of the bone fishermen and women who come to Abaco, are drawn to the better known Marls near Marsh Harbour.

The put at the creek north of Cooperstown (that actually divides the two islands) gives guests access to an excellent area that is very close to the creek itself and you can be fishing in less than 2 minutes. The islands just offshore resemble long fingers that create long deep bays with good wading for big fish. Good quality sand and coral flats along with nice sized fish in the 3-5 pound range are what guests can anticipate. We’ve even seen a decent number of permit is this area both on the flats around the outer cayes as well as the cut flats that run along the mainland heading back towards Fox Town. Guides will meet guests each morning in front of the reception office and from there it’s anywhere from 10 to 20 minutes to the boat put in, depending on your guide’s plan for the day. The quality of the guiding in this northern part of Abaco is simply outstanding!

BOATS AND EQUIPMENT
