Cosmoledo Atoll
THE FISHING
There are two components to the fishing at Cosmoledo Atoll and they are both exceptional. This is probably the only place in the world where guests can enjoy such superb flats fishing and extraordinary blue water fishing all in the same day. As much as we’ve traveled over the years to fish, we know of no other location that offers a better saltwater fishing experience than Cosmoledo. The bonefishing on these flats is the finest we’ve ever experienced and time and time again we hear veteran anglers remark that this location offers the best bonefishing they’ve ever had. The bonefishing at Cosmoledo takes place on a vast network of hard packed white sand flats that stretch as far as the eye can see.
The average size of the fish is about 6 pounds and on our last trip to the atoll in April of 2008, every single guest who accompanied us for the week landed at least one bonefish of 10 pounds! There are a very good number of golden permit on these flats as well large numbers of milkfish. Big Giant Trevally cruise the edges of the flats and most of our guests will wade with two rods, one rigged for bones and a larger rod rigged for GT’s. The flats fishing is all wading and guests will be taken via zodiacs from the ship to the flats where you will be dropped off and picked up. The blue water fishing that we do here is almost beyond description. We have spent many trips fishing and searching these waters for the most productive areas of the atoll. We have also devised some excellent teasing techniques during our many trips that produce sailfish, 60-100 pound GT’s, wahoo, huge grouper and snappers as well as tuna and all manner of ocean jacks.
We fish the blue water from the zodiacs and there are usually two sessions per day where we are fishing for these larger pelagics. The first half of the week is spent anchored on the northwest outer edge of the atoll. This allows guests to access the whole western half of the atoll which includes a massive flats network for bonefish, permit and milkfish as well as the best blue water area around the atoll for both GT’s and wahoo on the fly. Half way through the week, the ship will move inside the atoll which allows guests to fish the eastern half of Cosmoledo. This includes the renowned Ray Charles Flat as well as the highly productive inner passage into the atoll.
BOATS AND EQUIPMENT
The boats used to get out to the flats as well as fish the blue water are 23 foot zodiacs powered by 85 horse powered engines. These zodiacs are the ideal watercraft to fish challenging conditions found at the Cosmoledo Atoll. Both fly fishing and spin casing are welcome.
GETTING THERE
We’ve been doing this trip to Cosmoledo for the past 12 years and over that time, Slipstream Angling has this trip pretty dialed in. Given the complexity associated with this trip, due to its remote location, we absolutely have to have it dialed in! We highly recommend coming early and staying at one of the great hotels in Mahe. The charter flight from Mahe to Astove leaves at 8 am on Thursday morning and returns to Mahe the following Thursday in the late afternoon. The charter flight flies 3 hours south to Astove and from there it’s just a 90 minute boat ride out to Cosmoledo.
This is, in all likelihood, the most remote fishing trip on the planet!
