Alphonse Island
THE FISHING
The fishing program at Alphonse runs like a well oiled machine. Each morning after breakfast, guests will board the Tam Tam Mothership for the ride out to the fishing grounds where the flats skiffs are waiting. The guides will take their guests to a designated area to fish that day and guests will rotate between the guides to ensure that as wide an area as possible has been fished by the end of the week. The average day is 8 hours long and starts when guests reach the flats.
The St. Francois lagoon is an incredibly vast flats system interspersed with channels and cuts that host approximately 60 species which can be landed on the fly. The bonefish flats are a hard packed white sand bottom covering roughly 10,000 acres. The sight casting that these flats allow is exceptional and it’s not uncommon for an experienced saltwater angler to land 20-40 bonefish on an incoming tide and falling tide. Most of the fishing is done while wading as the guide will head to a specific area within the lagoon and then he and his guests will walk the flats, allowing both anglers to fish at the same time. Most of the trevally fishing is also done while wading.
The GT’s in particular are frequently found near the surf break on the reef and they will pretty much hit anything thrown in front of them. There are times when the flats skiff will be utilized to help with fighting a large trevally, of which there are plenty. This is a diverse fishery that will cater to all levels of skill. Catch and release is strictly enforced and barbless hooks are mandatory.
BOATS AND EQUIPMENT
The skiffs used at Alphonse are Mavericks and Dolphin Super Skiffs powered by 50 horse powered engines. This is a fly fishing only location. Absolutely no spin fishing is allowed. There is limited gear rental should you break rods while fishing.
GETTING THERE
Guests will need to fly into the capital city of Mahe from one of several European cities offering overnight air service to the Seychelles. We have also recently started booking guests through Dubai from the US and Canada, which has worked out well. Once guests have cleared customs in Mahe, they will be met by a Slip Stream Angling representative who will help facilitate the chosen itinerary. Again, when possible, we highly recommend coming in a day or two early and staying at one of the great hotels in Mahe. The charter flight from Mahe to Alphonse Island leaves at noon on Saturdays and returns to Mahe the following Saturday in the late afternoon.
Slipstream is a full service travel company that can handle a variety of services relating to your trip. For assistance, please contact us directly at 1 866 644-7703.
