Langa

THE FISHING

The River Langa is one of the finest Salmon rivers in Iceland and has rightly earned worldwide acclaim. Thanks to ongoing ecological works the river benefits from almost 100 documented, individual pools. The river has benefited from the construction of a number of Fish Ladders increasing both fish habitat and resultant fishing. A water-regulating dam at the source means that the Langa has a sound and steady flow whatever the weather. These improvements as well as the beauty of the falls combine to create a spectacular fishing environment with powerful, hard fighting fish.

The river Langa fishes 12 rods in the prime weeks, divided into four rods per beat fishing three beats, each beat fishing two rods on the upper and two rods on the lower section. Ranking well into the top ten most prolific Salmon rivers in Iceland, Langa maintains its water height with a flow control from the top lake Langavatn. This means that even in low water conditions for other nearby rivers, Langa has enough water stored to maintain good flow rate for up to four weeks.

Langa is ideally suited to single-handed rods with floating lines, best married with small flies and tubes in patterns such as the legendary ‘Langa Fancy’. Other favourites include the Red Frances, Sunray Shadow and almost any micro-tube, especially when hitched. With such a large array of recognised pools and falls there is a great diversity of fishing water. Almost all pools are easily accessible with well-constructed access tracks allowing anglers of all ages an easy access to the pristine fishing.

Langa fishes 12 rods in pairs on 3 beats with four rods per beat. The pairs switch between the upper part of the beat and the lower within the session. There is private road access to the entire river. Some pools require a walk from the track and others require a small climb down to the pools. Many pools benefit from not being approached from above due to shadowing the pool and it is often best to cross the river and travel down to the next pools without spooking fish. It is highly recommended that you carry a small waterproof rucksack or similar so you can spend as much time fishing as possible without returning to your guide’s car.
