THE FISHING
The fishing at the Rio Colorado Lodge focuses on tarpon and snook. Tarpon can be found in either the river and or out in the ocean. The tarpon may be rolling up on the surface or can be found 8-15 feet down. The snook fishing is done primarily in the river, however, large snook can be found just outside the river mouths, lurking in the ocean breakers. There are other species available in the river and lagoons, so if you’d like to spend a day fishing the back country, just let your guide know the day before so he can plan the following day accordingly. The fishing day at the lodge is broken down into morning and afternoon sessions and begins at 7:00am-7:30am depending on guest motivation (if you are ready to go right at 7:00am, the guide will be ready to take you!) The morning session ends at 11:30am when all boats return to the lodge for lunch. There is a siesta after lunch until 1:30pm when the afternoon fishing session begins. The afternoon session ends at 5:00pm-5:30pm when the boats return to the lodge for cocktails and dinner.
The fishing out of Quepos averages between 9-10 hours per day, depending on the boat and captain you are fishing with and the captains we’ve hired are all experienced with the needs of fly rodders as well as spin and trolling. The fishing out of Quepos consists of both inshore and offshore, our captains are highly skilled in both environments. Inshore days will produce rooster fish, jacks, snappers and snook. Offshore, the Quepos area is a sailfish Mecca and there are few places that can offer more raised bills. Other species include marlin, tuna, dorado and amberjack. The three days of fishing out of Quepos are broken down into 1 day of inshore fishing and two days of offshore fishing. The boats used out of Quepos are 25 feet with twin 200’s. Larger boats can be requested at an additional charge.
BOATS AND EQUIPMENT
The boats used at the Rio Colorado Lodge are 21 feet long customized pangas with 90 horse powered 4 stroke engines. The boats used out of Quepos are 26 foot customized fiberglass boats with single or twin 200’s. Our 32 foot boats can be requested at an additional charge of $300 USD per person.
GETTING THERE
Guests will fly into San Jose on either Friday or Saturday where you will be met by a Slipstream representative as soon as you’ve cleared customs. You will then be driven into downtown San Jose where you will spend the night at the Sleep Inn, which is located in the heart of San Jose’s entertainment district. Early the next morning, guests will be picked up in the lobby of the hotel for the shuttle ride out to the Sansa Air terminal, which is located just down the road form the International Airport. There is only one flight per day from San Jose to Barra Colorado and it leaves at 6:20am, which means that we’ll be picking guests up at 4:30am in the lobby of the hotel. The flight up to Barra Colorado is 30 minutes and flies over one of Costa Rica’s central mountain ranges. The lodge is a two minute walk from the airstrip. On the 4th morning, guests will fly back to San Jose at 7:00am and then fly over to the coastal town of Quepos. Upon arrival in Quepos, a taxi will take guests directly to the hotel in Manuel Antonio.

ACCOMMODATIONS
On arrival day guests will stay overnight at The Sleep Inn, located right in downtown San Jose, near the entertainment district. All the casinos, bars and several good restaurants are within a 5 minute walk from the hotel. The Rio Colorado Lodge is the oldest tarpon lodge in Costa Rica, having been in continuous operation since the early 1960’s. It is located on the banks of the Rio Colorado, about three miles from the ocean. The lodge is completely made out of local hardwoods and the bar, docks, dining areas and offices are all connected through a series of covered walkways. The rooms have either one or two beds, private bath with hot and cold water and A/C. Dress is casual and the lodge atmosphere is very informal. The accommodations in Manuel Antonio (MA) are at the hotel Villas Mymosa. This is one of our favorite places to stay in MA and it has all the facilities needed to make the stay a comfortable one. The hotel has a pool, A/C, cable TV, restaurant and bar on site and it is ideally situated between the town of Manuel Antonio and Quepos boat docks (about 5 minutes in either direction).
