Quepos

THE FISHING

The Quepos area is world renowned as a “must fish” destination and there are several compelling factors that make this such a great place to fish. The optimal time to come is December through April, when the weather is nice and the sea is calm. A couple of our guests last year commented on how surprised they were at how flat and tranquil the Pacific Ocean is off the coat of Costa Rica during the winter months. There are stretches during the season when this beautiful cobalt blue body of water scarcely has a ripple on it. This means that the 25 mile runs are done in the blink of an eye and the flexibility that this allows the boats in terms of getting to wherever the fish are, without dealing with rough seas, is a real plus. Another great aspect to this fishery is the outstanding diversity of species that can be caught in the waters off Quepos. Guests can expect to target sailfish, roosterfish, snappers (pargo), wahoo, marlin, tuna, dorado, grouper, and snook. The sailfishing in particular is excellent, this is an outstanding location for those who are looking to land their first sail on the fly. Guests can choose either inshore days or head offshore, depending on what they are most interested in chasing that day? Inshore the targeted species are rooster fish up to 65 pounds, pargo, jacks and grouper. Offshore, it’s a steady diet of sailfish, tuna, wahoo, marlin and dorado.

The methods used for fishing include, trolling lures, fishing with live bait and fly fishing. Not all boats and skippers are comfortable with guests throwing flies so please let us know if fly fishing is part of your plan so that we can secure the right captain and boat for your trip. While the fishing takes place out of the Quepos Harbour, guests stay in the town of Manuel Antonio, which is situated about a 7 minute taxi ride away. MA is a great little town with lots of lively bars and restaurants and a fabulous beach that draws people from around the world. If socializing is an important part of your trip after fishing, you will enjoy our Slipstream Guide to Manuel Antonios best restaurants and numerous watering holes.

BOATS AND EQUIPMENT

The two main sizes of boats we use in Quepos are the 26 foot center consoles powered with single and twin 4 strokes and the larger, 31 and 32 foot boats with fighting chairs. Captain Chris runs one of the 26’s and he has equipped his boat with twin 4 strokes, making it the fastest charter boat in Quepos. While speed is not always needed, it’s nice to know that a 20 mile run out to the tuna blitzes can be done in a hury. Both the 26’s have the latest in marine communications systems. The 31’s and 32 foot boats are equipped with marine heads (a good idea if ladies are coming) twin diesel engines, modern marine navigation systems and fighting chairs. Captain Ross skippers our favorite 32 and if you plan of fly fishing for all or part of your trip, booking this boat should be a priority.

Guests will fly into the capital city of San Jose where you will be met by a Slipstream Angling representative as soon as you’ve cleared customs. You will then be driven into downtown San Jose where you will spend the night at the Sleep Inn, located in the heart of San Jose’s entertainment district. The next morning our driver will pick you up in the lobby of the hotel and bring you to the domestic air terminal which is located just down the street from the International Airport. ACCOMMODATIONS

We base our guests out of a hotel called Villas Mymosas. This is our favorite location to fish from when staying in this area as it has all the facilities needed to make the stay a comfortable one. The hotel has a restaurant and bar, pool, A/C, cable TV, and is ideally situated between the town of Manuel Antonio and Quepos boat docks (about 5 minutes in either direction). Each of the suites have two comfortable beds, along with a functioning kitchen with fridge and a large sitting area with couches. There is plenty of storage space and large a large closet for cloths and gear. The hotel has an excellent restaurant run by a British expat named Steven. The meals are outstanding and are prepared right in front of guests in an open kitchen format. Steven has formally trained as a chef and his culinary skills are exceptional! Breakfast is served at 6 am on the days that guests fish and the taxi is waiting at 6:45 am for the short ride down to the boat dock.
