Turneffe Island Resort
THE FISHING
“Variety” is probably the best word to describe the flats fishing found when basing out of Turneffe Island Resort for a week of fishing. The resort is beautifully situated at the southern end of the Turneffe Atoll, which gives anglers easy access to all manner of flats species and environments.
The bonefishing takes place on the hard-packed coral flats on the eastern side of the atoll. Several of these flats are located near the resort and are quite expansive. These flats are a mix of broken coral and sand that extend to the reef break, along with turtle grass flats that are in tight to the coral flats. This environment provides an excellent habitat for crustaceans and minnows to live and hide in, which in turn brings in the bonefish up to feed on these flats. The average sized bonefish at Turneffe will weigh between 2-3 pounds with larger fish seen and cast to almost daily. Without question, Turneffe Island Resort offers the best wading opportunities for bonefish in the entire country. These flats are visually stunning and you just never know what you might find on them?
In the spring and summer months, the nearby creeks and mangrove cuts produce good numbers of tarpon, some of which can get quite big. In less than 10 minutes from the lodge, guests can be fishing these creeks for tarpon when the season and conditions are right. No long boat runs to get there!
In terms of the permit fishing, Turneffe produces a lot of good sized permit, both on the edges of the flats as well as in the deeper water. Inside the atoll, permit can be found on the edges of the coral flats as well as in a little deeper water, inside the mangrove lagoons. The “Southern Elbow” of Turneffe is renowned for its schools of hundreds of permit that are often found floating on the surface in very deep water. The conditions have to be calm to get out there and the site of these enormous schools is quite incredible.
BOATS AND EQUIPMENT
The lodge uses comfortable Dolphin Super Skiffs powered by 50 HP, 4-stroke engines. These skiffs are great for this location in that they draw very little water and have plenty of storage space.
