Turneffe Flats
THE FISHING
Turneffe Atoll has long been recognized as one the finest flats fishing destinations found anywhere! It’s blessed with a vast network of wadeable bonefish flats that seemingly go on forever. The Turneffe Atoll is the largest of the four coral atolls found in the Western Hemisphere and Turneffe Flats Lodge is beautifully situated in the midst of countless productive flats, the majority of which are only 5 to 20 minutes away. The expansive lush flats found at Turneffe are full of crabs, shrimp, and other bonefish foods.
This translates into incredible numbers of bonefish, both in large and small schools, as well as singles and doubles. Wading these picturesque flats while sight casting to tailing and cruising bonefish is an absolute joy. The hard packed coral flats are relatively easy to wade, and anglers of all ages can handle the terrain.
Bonefishing is a mainstay of the fishing at Turneffe Flats Lodge, with miles of crystal clear, wadeable flats. Anglers can either wade or fish from the boat, depending on preference as well as what the situation dictates. Permit are found throughout the year in abundance out at Turneffe, usually in the cuts and channels and on the edges of the coral flats. The fish range between 8 and 20 pounds, although larger fish are caught with a fair degree of regularity. Even though there are times when permit will be found in very shallow water at Turneffe, by and large when targeting permit, anglers will encounter them in 6 to 10 feet of water. The tarpon fishing can be excellent during the spring and summer months.
Most of our migratory tarpon are in the 70-90 pound range, but we see a few 150-200 pound monsters each year. As a result, if you’re serious about chasing a “Slam”, there are few better places anywhere on earth than Turneffe in the spring and summer. The skinny water fishing is that good and it’s supported by a guide base that is first rate. Craig has created a wonderful environment where the guests, guides and staff are all on the same page in terms of delivering a first-class angling experience.
BOATS AND EQUIPMENT
The flats skiffs at Turneffe are 16 foot Super Dolphin skiffs powered by 60 horse powered engines. The skiffs have rod holders, poling platforms and a generous casting area at the front of the skiff.

GETTING THERE
As soon as guests clear Belizean customs, they will be met by a member of the Turneffe Flats ground staff. Guests will then be driven into Belize City and the Princess Hotel and Casino, where the boat for the lodge departs at 2 pm on Saturdays. The boat ride out to the atoll is on a 48 foot Ocean Pro and it normally takes about 90 minutes to reach the lodge from the docks at the hotel in Belize City. It’s an easy trip out and back.
