Placencia

THE FISHING

As an angling destination, Placencia was put on the map because of the quality of the permit fishing. The flats to the south and east of the village are world renowned for producing quality fish and there are few places better where guests can target tailing permit in skinny water. Everyone has heard about how difficult it is to land a permit on a fly rod. However, with the number of fish you’ll see when fishing out of Placencia, your odds of catching a permit are greatly increased. The flats are hard packed and offer excellent wading opportunities. There are also resident populations of tarpon that live year round off the coast, with the average fish weighing between 30 to 70 pounds.

The huge mangrove estuary to the west of town is an excellent fishery and one that has remained largely untouched by angling pressure. For those unfamiliar with this type of backcountry fishing, it’s a great way to spend a couple of days. This estuary stretches all the way down to Monkey River and is a prime breeding ground for tarpon and snook as well as a variety of other fish. Permit can also be found in this backcountry area as will a variety of jacks and snappers. This mangrove forest makes for a great place to spend a day or two if the wind is howling out on the ocean side flats, which does occasionally happen. Farther south, the prolific Punta Ycacos Lagoon can be fished by those who don’t mid leaving at first light to start their day.

This is not a strong location for bonefish and for guests who want to focus on bonefish, Placencia is not recommended.

BOATS AND EQUIPMENT

The skiffs are 23 foot Mexican style pangas with 60-75 horse powered four stroke engines. The skiffs have generous casting platforms at the front of the boat, along with rod holders. – Fly and spin casting welcome
