Blue Horizon Lodge
THE FISHING
In the world of permit fishing, the Blue Horizon Lodge has such a favorable location and it’s no coincidence that Lincoln Westby picked this island when he was looking to build a lodge that put anglers in the very heart of the best permit flats in the country.
The permit flats extend both north and south of the island and we’ve never been anywhere that consistently produces more permit than this area There are several good permit grounds to the north of Water Caye, starting in the Sand Fly Range, as well as in the Blue Ground Range of cays, which is located directly to the north of the Blue Horizon Lodge. To the south, the countless saltwater permit flats are the finest in the world. These pristine flats hold incredible numbers of permit, and can be counted on for numerous quality shots while wading.
Some of the flats are as close as a 10-minute boat ride from the island. The permit fishing in this area takes place on tidal flats in about 1-3 feet of water and guests will be casting to tailing permit in much the same way they have for tailing bonefish in other locations. Guests can expect to see 15-25 tailing fish per day and we’ve had 100+ fish days once or twice a year. The majority of the fishing for permit is done while wading, making this one of angling’s ultimate challenges!
Tarpon are also available on a fairly consistent basis, with the best time to target the silver kings being late spring and early summer. There are several schools of resident tarpon that can be fished year-round. By mid April, both the Tobacco Caye and Water Caye channels become active feeding zones for the migratory tarpon that run the reef. While few anglers come to the Blue Horizon Lodge for the bonefishing, there are flats in the area where anglers will find tailing fish. Additionally, there are several large schools of bonefish up at Water Caye, which is nice to have in your back pocket when you need a bonefish to complete a Grand Slam.
BOATS AND EQUIPMENT
The flats skiffs at the Blue Horizon Lodge are 23 foot Mexican Skiffs powered by 50-115 horse power 4 stroke engines. The boats have lean bars, rod holders and a generous casting area at the front of the skiff.
GETTING THERE
Guests will fly from the Belize International Airport down to the town of Placencia. It’s about a 30- minute flight, unless the flight stops in Dangriga first, which is fairly common. If you do stop in Dangriga first, it’s usually a quick stop to let people off or to pick up passengers and its then another 15-minute flight down the coast to Placencia. When you arrive at the Placencia Airstrip, a lodge rep will be waiting to bring you to the boat, which is moored at the Municipal Pier Marina. From the pier, the boat ride is 16 miles, or about an hour, to North East Caye, the island where Blue Horizon Lodge is located.
Departure times will be arranged on island and will vary based on all departing guest flight times that day. The lodge does its best to minimize wait times for local flight departures, but please keep in mind that you are going out to an island, which has its own logistical aspects that can prove challenging. Depending on the schedule of other guests arriving or departing, you may be asked to relax at the Municipal Pier for a short period of time. You will be able to drop your luggage with the boat captain and relax at one of the nearby restaurants. Big Becks restaurant and watering hole is a favorite among the Blue Horizon Lodge staff.
