Holbox
THE FISHING
The Holbox fishery differs substantially from the one found in Campeche, as do the size of the tarpon that guests will be fishing for there. The Holbox tarpon will average between 60 and 120 pounds. These are the big migratory fish that travel a mysterious route that scientists and anglers alike still don’t fully understand. What we do know is that these fish begin to pass through the waters off of Holbox beginning in April and continue to do so until late September of each year. Because these fish are on the move, it is difficult to say where exactly off of Holbox that they will be found. During certain periods, the tarpon can be found fairly close to the ocean or backside of the island. At other times, they are passing far to the east, out by the lighthouse and points further east. More often than not, the tarpon will be swimming in schools of up to a hundred fish. The average water depth of where the tarpon are found is usually about 16 to 20 feet deep and as far out as 5 or 6 miles offshore. The guides are very adept at maneuvering the boat so that guests will be positioned in such a way that the fish will be coming towards the skiff. This is not always possible because the tarpon don’t swim in a straight line but I’ve been very impressed with the guides’ ability to get guests into the right place at the right time when a school of tarpon are approaching.
If the weather is not co operating there are some large lagoons to the east of Holbox that provide good juvenile tarpon and snook fishing. And while we don’t go to Holbox thinking about fishing for juvenile tarpon, these lagoons are a great back up plan when the wind is ripping out on the ocean.
BOATS AND EQUIPMENT
23 foot Mexican pangas powered by 50 four stroke engines and 60 HP two stroke engines. Large non slip casting platforms make these skiffs easy to fish from.
GETTING THERE
Once guests clear customs in Cancun, they need to head outside to the waiting area. It can be very chaotic but our driver will be waiting outside with a sign that reads “SLIPSTREAM” and “YOUR NAME”. Once you find our driver, he will escort you over to your waiting taxi for the 90 minute drive from the Cancun Airport to the coastal town of Chiquila. Upon arrival at the water taxi stand, guests will board the waiting water taxi for the 20 minute shuttle out to the island. A waiting golf cart will then pick you up at the water taxi stand on Holbox and will then drive you the 5 minutes over to the hotel. All the transfers are booked in advance and all you have to do is show up!

TRAVEL DOCUMENTS REQUIRED
American, EU and Canadian citizens require a passport valid for at least six months after date of entry, along with a return ticket. You must supply proof of citizenship to obtain a Mexican Tourist Card and to enter the country. The Tourist Card application is issued at the ticket counter by airlines that fly into Mexico. Just fill it out while in flight and present it along with your proof of citizenship to the immigration officials when you arrive in Mexico City or Cancun. For proof of citizenship you can use only a valid passport (check expiration date). The tourist card will be checked at your first point of entry. The immigration official will retain one copy and give you the other, which you must surrender at the airline ticket counter when you check in for your return flight. Keep your copy (Tourist Card) in your possession during your stay in Mexico. No visas or inoculations are required for U.S, Canadian or EU citizens. A Mexican departure tax is payable at the airport when leaving Mexico. Some airlines include this as a prepaid part of your ticket. Please check with us or your travel agent or carrier to verify this.
