Coyhaique River Lodge

THE FISHING

Variety is the spice of life when fishing from Coyhaique River Lodge. Perched above the banks on the world famous Coyhaique River, the lodge has access to a truly amazing variety of highly fishable waters. The angling program at the lodge is overseen by head guide Alejandro Trepiana and there is very little that he won’t do in terms of going the extra fishing mile for a guest. He and all the guides clearly take pride in being able to take their clients to new and different water every day. Seldom does any body of water see more than three or four days of pressure in the season. There is so much water around Coyhaique that most days you won’t likely see another angler. The guides all speak good English and are adept with boats and are highly accomplished anglers.

What we like about this operation is the incredible flexibility that the fishing program has. If there has been a lot of rain, the guides always know where to find some clean water. If you were going to be fishing a river that has blown out, Plan B might me an intimate spring creek that is running clear. The guides will always take you to the best place to fish, given the prevailing weather conditions while you are there. They always have a back-up plan that is well thought out and their vehicles are clean modern 4-wheel drive SUV’s that can pretty much get anywhere you need to be.

The Rainbow trout can get quite big in this part of Patagonia, with fish up to 26 inches not unheard of. The Brown Trout fishing is superb and fish over 30 inches are a landed each year. That translates to a 12 pound fish!!!

Northern Patagonia’s climate is much milder than its better known southern end, Tierra del Fuego.

The spring and summers typically go from the end of October through April which makes it the ideal vacation destination for travelers escaping from the northern hemisphere’s harsh and sometimes long winters.

Mid November through December – Be prepared for some rain. Expect 40’ in the morning and increasing to highs of 60’ in the afternoon. Many Chileans prefer to travel to the Aysen region this time of year.

Mid December through Mid January – Temperatures begin to warm up to an average of 50-75’. Chance of rain will be less than in early December. Expect some rain for a least part of the month. This is the time to come see the multitude of spring flowers in bloom. There is still enough snow on the surrounding mountains for ideal photographing.

Mid January through February – Temperatures warm up to an average of 60-80’ with less rain. Don’t forget sunscreen because it is easy to get a sun burn while enjoying the many water involved activities. This is prime travel time so plan to book early for these weeks.

March and Mid April – Temperatures will range from 35’ in the morning to 60’ in the afternoon. This is an excellent time to visit Patagonia because there are fewer people traveling and fall is in the air. The rainy season is starting up again, but the fishing is still good.
