Cinco Rios Lodge

THE FISHING

Due to the cool temperatures and prolific rivers in the Asyen region of Patagonia, the Chilean trout in this part of the country have found an ideal habitat to thrive and reproduce. Lots of insect hatches and plenty of water translate to excellent numbers of big trout. Aside from the exceptional comfort of the lodge, one of the real strengths of Cinco Rios Lodge is the marvelous diversity of the fishery. From “lagos” with huge brown trout, to salmon runs in the Simpson, this part of Chile has just about everything a trout angler could want. And then some!

Cinco Rios offers a unique combination of spring creeks, rivers and lakes that anglers would need a dozen trips or more before they exhaust their fishing opportunities. Fat Browns in small creeks, sipping trout rising on pristine freestone rivers, to lakes with large trout cruising the weed lines, the fishery at Cinco Rios is ideally suited for anglers looking for a nice variety of environments to fish, along with a diverse series of species to target. Browns and Rainbow Trout are both plentiful, along with both Chinook and Coho Salmon. The rainbows will average between 14-22 inches while the browns will range from 14-24 inches, with fish over 30 inches caught every year.

KEY RIVERS

The Simpson River It is probably the most famous river in the Aysén region; the Simpson River tends to fish like classic Montana freestone and has significant caddis and mayfly opportunities.

The Paloma River The Paloma River is a river that begins at the Desierto lake and runs northwest until it meets the Desague River about 15 miles away. A glacial freestone flows iridescent blue water and provides fantastic dry fly and streamer action. Predominantly a brown trout fishery, the introduction of rainbows in the late nineties has proven to be a big success and some very fat rainbows have been taken from the Paloma over the past 5 years.

The Azul River Located between Lago Azul and Lago Desierto, the Rio Azul is accessible by boat as it gets you into a remote area. Flowing beneath the shadows of Cerro Castillo, it is probably one of the world’s most beautiful fishing locations. Browns from 17-21 inches are quite common with even larger fish that are taken.

The Desague River The Rio Desague drains Lago Elizalde and runs for about five miles until it enters Lago Caro. Within this short stretch of river are browns and rainbows 17-23 inches with many larger trophies lurking in its depths. Jet boats will run into this remote river for some spectacular scenery and dry fly fishing.

Another great option to Cinco Rios Lodge is that their sister lodge, Estancia del Zorro, is not too far away so you can visit both lodges in one trip, if you have the time.
