La Jacetania Lodge

THE FISHING

There are two critical components to the fishing program that combine to make this a truly special angling experience. First is the location of the lodge, situated on the bank of the Aragon River, in Santa Cilia de Jaca, a small Pyrenean village of some 190 inhabitants. The lodge is very close to the confluence of two other main rivers at Puente La Reina, both of which flow from the nearby Hecho and Anso Valleys. This places the lodge in a spectacularly strategic location, right in the heart our area of operation for this, the largest fishable section of the Pyrenees.

This area encompasses over 800 miles (1,000 Km) of rivers and 30 high mountain lakes inhabited by trout, all within in a 30-mile (50Km) radius of the lodge. The sheer diversity of this part of the Pyrenees is nothing short of mind boggling and you could do 20 trips here and never fish the same exact water, tier level or environment.

The typical high mountain streams in this area have large rocks with rapids and fairly narrow widths. The mid-section of waters generally offer more comfortable fishing with smaller rocks, rapids, churning pools and calmer water. The average width of these mid tier rives is anywhere from 30 to 45 feet across. The lower tier rivers are slow moving and can range up to 90 yards across. Usually between 2 and 6 feet deep, these rivers offer excellent, easy wading.

From the La Jacetania Lodge, guests can target the high mountains streams inside the Ordesa y Monte Perdido National Park. This incredible park is one of the most stunning environments we have ever fished and there are many highly productive streams and rivers within its borders that cater to all levels of fitness and angler skill. For the more adventurous, there are some extraordinary canyons that can be hiked into, which offer excellent dry fly fishing for the native Mediterranean Brown Trout. In this cold clear water these trout rarely exceed 15 inches but it is not uncommon to have a 40-60 fish days in this spectacular setting.

The second part of the trip that makes this trip so special from an angling perspective is the head guide and owner of the operation, Ivan Tarin. Ivan is one of the most remarkable people we’ve ever met and it’s an absolute pleasure to spend time with him, whether it’s on the river or in one of his favorite tapas bars scattered throughout the villages and towns in the Pyrenees. Funny, smart and gracious, Ivan is one of those rare people who just live and breathe fly fishing. You can see it in everything he does and his knowledge of areas’ rivers, streams and lakes is nothing short of encyclopedic. Ivan’s passion is dry fly fishing and he has many secret holes and creeks where he takes guests looking to land trophy fish on a dry fly. He is without question one of the most instinctive anglers we have ever met and is willing to teach and impart his knowledge of the area with a smile. Ivan’s team of handpicked guides are each experts in their own rights and each of them speak both English and Spanish.

ACCOMMODATIONS

Set in a tranquil riverside atmosphere, next to the bell tower of the Church of Santa Cilia, the lodge was once a small 15th century palace belonging to the monks of the Monastery of San Juan de la Pena. Now fully renovated to incorporate many of the comforts that traveling anglers have come to expect, the spacious 3 story lodge has 5 bedrooms that can be configured into either single or double occupancy rooms.

Situated on the first floor, the wader/tack room is there to store guests’ waders, boots, jackets and gear after a day of fishing. A small fly shop is just off the tack room to help augment an anglers fly box just in case something is forgotten back home. Also on the first floor, the bar looks out on to the parking lot and Aragon River, which is just a stones throw away from the property. Also located on the first floor, are a comfortable sitting area, full fly tying bench with vises and the bar. The bar is fully stocked with spirits and ice cold local beers.

The dining room is on the second floor of the lodge and this room consistently produces some of the best dining experiences in the country. Vali is a true artist in the kitchen and she prepares one stellar meal after another. From local dishes to seafood, Vali is a star and her meals are as good as those you’d find in any fine restaurant in the area. And when paired with some of the excellent regional wines, the combination is a gastronomic treat you won’t soon forget!
