Grand Paradiso National Park Split Trip

THE FISHING

Fishing the Grand Paradiso National Park

With a backdrop so visually fantastic, the fishing might almost be considered a secondary element to this part of the trip. The Gran Paradiso National Park is Italy’s version of Yellowstone. Located between Piemonte and Valle d’Aosta, the park, established in 1922, is the oldest National Park in the country. This section of the park that we’ll be fishing has two main rivers. The Hurtier River and the Grand Eyvia River. Both of these freestone rivers offer fairly easy access in and out, along with excellent water clarity. These two national parks rivers offer good site fishing opportunities for Rainbow Trout and Brown Trout, with fish up to six pounds being available when conditions are good.  The dry fly fishing is the summer and fall is quite good, with some consistently good hatches throughout the late spring, summer and fall.

Fishing Piedmont

This part of Italy is rich in angling tradition and history and would be the Italian equivalent of what Stockbridge is to trout fishing in England.  We will be fishing for four days in the Sesia Valley, fishing the Mastallone, Egua, Rimella, and Sermenza rivers. Spectacular mountain landscapes throughout, offering crystal clear freestone rivers that hold Rainbow and Brown Trout, along with Marble Trout and some nice sized Grayling. Depending on conditions, dry fly, nymphing and streamers techniques will be all utilized in this part of Italy. The rivers of Piedmont are generally pretty easy to fish with good/easy in and out access to the rivers. Guests will have the same guide for the duration of the trip and all the guides who work with us in Northern Italy are dry fly oriented.

BOATS AND EQUIPMENT

This is a walk and wade fishing trip.

GETTING THERE

Guests will arrive and depart from this trip through the Milan Malpensa International Airport (airport code MXP) Because Milan is such a vibrant and interesting city, filled with fantastic restaurants, bars and shopping, we always recommend that guests coming in for this trip, spend a couple of days in the city before the fishing part of the trip starts. We will coordinate your transfer up to the town of Cogne and the Gan Paradiso National Park to pick you up from either the Mian International Airport of the hotel you are staying at in Milan.

ARRIVAL AND DEPARTURE LOGISTICS

At the beginning of the trip, on Day 1, guests will be picked up in Milan and driven north to Bocciolaro Cravagliana, which is a small, rural hamlet, located right on the Mastallone River. This is a very remote and off the beaten path part of Italy and depending on the traffic coming out of Milan, the drive takes anywhere from 90 minutes to two hours. On the morning of your departure, guests will be driven back to either downtown Milan or to the Milan International Airport.

THE LODGE

When fishing the Piedmont region, guests will be staying in a small guest house situated on the Torrente Mastallone River. Land Wasser is a small, family owned and operated hotel, that only has five rooms in total. The rooms are large and very comfortable, with each room having a private bathroom. The owner of the property, the fabulous Corrine, is a wonderful host and she takes great care of our guests. Set in the foothills of Norther Italy, the property has two sections to it. The first section, which is located right on the Mastellone River and overlooks a lovely emerald green pool where guests can see Rainbow Trout right from their rooms. The other, larger section of the hotel, is an old stone building that has been lovingly restored by Corrine’s husband. This part of the hotel is located on the other side of the road and directly across from where the two river suites are situated. The ground floor of this section consists of the breakfast room and kitchen. On the second floor there is one guest room while on the third floor, there are two guest rooms that can accommodate either one or two anglers. Each of the rooms is spacious with a good-sized closet area for clothing and gear. All of these rooms have balconies and windows that offer a great view of the hills in front of the hotel.
