Austria Mittersill
THE FISHING
The area around Mittersill has the best trout rivers in all of Austria. The rivers will range from larger, fast-moving waters like the Salzach River, to much smaller creeks and streams that are not more than 20 feet across. The Stubach River has a nice mix of species available while the Amerbach River holds some good sized trout. The mix and variety of fishing environments is exceptional and regardless of where you are fishing each day, the backdrop is always stunning. On this trip, guests can expect to target, Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout, Brook Trout and Grayling. Most of the rivers are within a 30-minute drive of then hotel and many of them are under the private lease of the hotel and are designated as “fly only” rivers.
One of the keys to understanding the fishery here is that the rivers and lakes in this part of Austria are so cold and that the trout generally don’t get very big, in comparison to their neighbours, Slovenia and Italy. If you want to focus on big fish, this is not the right location for you. However, if you are interested in a fairly technical fishery, with very good dry fly fishing and excellent species diversity, the rich Austrian culture and spectacular scenery, will deliver a strong overall experience.
The crown jewel of Austrian fly fishing is the Krimmler Ache River, which is located up in the Hohe Tauern National Park. The Krimmler Ache is about an hour drive from Mittersill and the winding drive up to the park is visually stunning. Once you get up to the valley and see the river, it is absolutely breathtaking. I honestly think it’s the most beautiful alpine valley I’ve ever seen. The river has Rainbow Trout, Brook Trout and Grayling available to anglers. The dry fly fishing is good to excellent, depending on what time of year you are fishing it.
Due to its proximity to both Slovenia and Northern Italy, we can build an excellent multi destination trout trip for our clients, with Austria as one of the locations.
