Currency:

There are two separate currencies used within Cuba. The Cuban peso, denoted by CUP, is one of the two official currencies used in Cuba. The CUP does not have any value outside of Cuba, and is used almost exclusively within the nation, by Cubans. For many years, the United States Dollar (USD) has been used by tourists and for "luxury" items. However, usage of the USD has been replaced by the CUC, or the Cuban convertible peso. This is the currency that all tourists who come to Cuba will use while in the country. We advise our guests to bring either Euros or Canadian dollars.

Electricity:

A mixture of 220 and 110 volt sockets. Many hotels within Cuba have 120 volt and some have both within the same room. To be safe, it is always a good idea to bring a small adaptor for powering laptops, camera batteries, etc.

Language:

Spanish. Many younger people also speak some English but once you get outside Havana, very little English is spoken outside of the hotels.

Time Zone

Standard time is GMT -5. Cuba does practice daylight savings which begins in March where the country goes to GMT -4

Country Information

In many respects, Cuba is trapped in a 1950’s time warp that is difficult to fully comprehend. Old cars rumble by crumbling dilapidated buildings and time has seemingly stood still in this country for nearly 50 years. The remarkable thing about this situation is that these conditions have created a hybrid of circumstances that are absolutely captivating. Cuba is dynamic, unusual, contradictory and just plain fascinating. The culture of this country is absolutely electric. The people are vibrant and friendly, the music hypnotic and non-stop. This beautiful island nation has so much to offer the destination angler.

The island of Cuba is by far the largest Island in the Caribbean. At 1200 kilometers long, from Pinar Del Rio in the east, to Guantanamo in the west, Cuba is also the most geographically diverse island found in the Caribbean.

For anglers, the country and its waters are a fantasy playground of huge bonefish and unspoiled scenery. We have six world class fisheries in Cuba that that continue to get better: the Zapata Peninsula, Cayo Largo, Cayo Las Brujas, Jardines de la Reinas Cayo Cruz/Romano and Villa Clara. Each of these locations rate very highly because of the excellent fishing combined with the unique qualities that these very distinct locations offer to anglers.

The capital city, Havana, is a microcosm of all that is Cuban and there is nowhere else even remotely like it, anywhere on earth. The unbelievable pace of life in the city is overwhelming and it really has to be experienced to fully get a handle on how dynamic the city is and how much it has to offer.

A big part of what we do at Slipstream Angling in Cuba involves the city of Havana. Whenever possible, we design our trips so that the city plays a significant role in our guest’s Cuban fishing experience. This world class city has some wonderful things to see and do and we’ve spent the last decade developing relationships at some of the finest of these attractions. The sights and sounds of the city are not to be missed. In fact, we believe that our Havana entertainment schedule is equal to the quality of our fishing in Cuba.

When our groups arrive at the airport in Havana, they will be escorted directly to customs. Every one of our guests, whether traveling alone or in a large group, will be met as soon as they clear customs, by a member of the Slipstream Angling Adventures Cuba team.

Guests then head straight to the hotel in downtown Havana in a modern, air conditioned van or bus, depending on group size. For anglers not traveling with a group, we can create a tailor made Havana itinerary based specifically on your preference. We realize that not everyone has the time to spend an extra day or two in Havana, but we do highly recommend it, when time is not an issue.

Slipstream Angling Cuba has access to a fleet of classic American cars from the 1950’s. Each car is chauffeured and always plays a key role in making the first night in Havana special and worry free. Prior to dinner, we like to stop at one of the cities’ historic bars, several of which are over 150 years old and far off the beaten path. Dining out in Havana is always an event and we have some great restaurants that we’ve been going to for years. The food can be outstanding in Havana, provided you know where to go!

Perhaps our most popular stop in the city is the Partagas Cigar Factory. Run by two old friends of ours, Abel and Kikki, the factory is a fascinating window into the world of fine cigars. Names like Cohiba, Monte Christo and Romeo and Juliette are all produced at the factory. We’ve organized a wonderful private tour of the facility, which includes a visit to the VIP smoke room for a sampling of hand rolled cigars and fine aged rum.

Our logistical capacity to get clients to each of our angling locations is seamless and we handle all travel arrangements in Cuba. Our energy and passion for this wonderful country just keeps on growing by the day. We know how Cuba works and we enjoy sharing it with our guests.
